There’s still time to give!
We're in the home stretch and, with your generous support, a successful Campaign 2007 is within reach. You can make your contribution online now! Help for victims of domestic violence, programs for teens, job training and career advising assistance — these are among a number of pioneering services supported by the Jewish Community Federation Annual Campaign, and they need your contribution to continue.
Our Federation — our Jewish community — is internationally recognized for its innovative approaches in assisting Jews in the Bay Area, Israel, and around the world. We are proud to be a community that offers services to protect, nourish and encourage the many programs that meet ongoing needs and help in crisis situations. For example, your past gifts have helped underwrite Federation-funded programs to:
- Educate our community’s teens about date violence and secure safe housing for victims of domestic abuse;
- Build new resumes, find jobs, and develop skills for Bay Area unemployed;
- Provide vocational training to Ethiopian Jews in Israel;
- Ensure that vulnerable elderly have access to safe housing, healthy meals, and transportation to medical help;
- Provide fundamental aid — food, medicine, housing, and electricity — to Jews in need around the world;
- Welcome and engage local interfaith and LGBT families in Jewish life;
- Give Arab-Israeli children a head start with early-childhood education programs.
Your gift, whatever the amount, helps the Federation mobilize financial, intellectual, and humanitarian resources in the service of the Jewish people and the larger communities in which we live. |

Teens learn philanthropy, tackle tough issues
Ninth through 11th graders gain valuable leadership skills, bond with peers and make an impact by being involved in grantmaking boards through the Jewish Community Endowment Fund’s Teen Foundations Initiative.
This year, two groups of Bay Area teens — one focusing on tackling poverty, the other on improving children’s lives through education — announced their grants at ceremonies on June 10, 2007. Participants in the Peninsula Jewish Community Teen Foundation (PJCTF) and the Marin Jewish Community Teen Foundation (MJCTF) spent a year learning about the philanthropic process and raising money. Each group received a $5,000 matching grant to get them started. The PJCTF raised $44,500 and the MJCTF, in their inaugural year, raised $22,300, which were allocated as follows:
PJCTF: alleviating the causes of poverty, hunger and abuse locally and in Israel
- Ben Shemen, Israel
- Bedouin Women’s Embroidery Project, Israel
- The Bread Project, Oakland, CA
- Eastside College Preparatory School, East Palo Alto, CA
- Life Learning Academy, Treasure Island, CA
- Tel Hai Academic College, Israel
- World ORT
MJCTF: educational initiatives to improve children’s lives locally and around the world
- Canal Alliance, Marin County
- Educational Praxis, India
- Friends of Yemen Orde, Israel
- Global Fund for Women for projects in West Africa
- Hand in Hand, Israel
- USF School of Education and Hacienda San Rafael Ukum, Mexico
About the Teen Foundations Initiative
The Teen Foundation Initiative’s goal is to teach young people about the fundamentals of philanthropy and encourage them to move on to greater philanthropic roles over time. Over the course of a year-long program, teens get the opportunity to make serious decisions that impact local and worldwide Jewish communities.
The teens are guided through a process with their peers to help decide what takes priority among issues such as alleviating hunger in Israel, funding educational initiatives in Marin County, or supporting social services somewhere else.
Learning about how to allocate funds not only raises the teens’ awareness of current issues, needs and challenges, it instills the enduring principles of generosity and charity, and the value of tikkun olam (repairing the world).
Teen foundation boards are currently operating in Marin, the East Bay, and the South Peninsula, with two new foundations launching in San Francisco and the North Peninsula this fall. If you are a teen interested in applying for the grantmaking boards, you may apply before October 15 at www.jewishteenfoundation.org.
The Teen Foundation Initiative is a program of the Jewish Community Endowment Fund and supported by our generous donors.

Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards recognize Jewish teens for dedication to community service
Five extraordinary teens from throughout California have won the Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards for their volunteerism and positive impact on their communities. Each will receive $36,000, which will be used to support their college education and/or to further their community service efforts.
Seventy-five teens were nominated by community members. After an arduous but inspiring selection process, the winners were selected for this prestigious award: Amanda Haworth (La Jolla), Allison Hoffman (Los Altos), Justin Sachs (Carlsbad), Shira Shane (Encino) and Erich Sorger (Beverly Hills). An awards luncheon honoring them will be held this August in San Francisco.
Designed to recognize and celebrate the outstanding volunteer service achievements of Jewish teens, the Tikkun Olam Awards were established by the Helen Diller Family Foundation, a supporting foundation of the JCEF.
