Travel south by bus to the Negev Desert.

Afternoon

Arrival at Har Hanegev Field School, overlooking Ramon Crater, the world’s largest natural crater, also known as the “Grand Canyon of Israel.”

Evening

“Introduction to the Desert.”

Noded — Wandering Camp in the Desert

A wilderness hike and camping experience in the Ramon Crater led by an expert nature guide and the Diller/Nesiya staff. The wandering camp includes hiking, cooking and camping out, getting to know the natural environment, journal writing and creative activities.

Tuesday, July 17: Reaching for the Beyond
Morning

“Lech Lecha” workshop led by Nesiya staff: “Journeying Toward The Unknown — Avram's Journey South and Our Own.”

Afternoon

Hike down into the depths of the Ramon Crater.

Evening

Dinner and bonfire.

Wednesday, July 18: The Desert as "Hefker"  

Morning

Continue Noded wandering experience.
Begin day of hiking at sunrise; the day will explore the emptiness of the desert and will introduce and examine the theme of "hefker", meaning "abandoned" or "ownerless".
Lunch in the desert.

Afternoon

Continue hiking.

Evening

Dinner and bonfire.

Thursday, July 19: Becoming Like the Desert
Morning

Continue Noded wandering experience.
Lunch in the desert.

Afternoon

Return to Har Hanegev Field School. Showers and rest time.

Evening

Introduction to Shabbat and Shabbat committees — participants plan Shabbat programming.

Friday, July 20: Arts Workshops — Journeys in the Desert
Morning

Arts workshops at Har Hanegev Field School on the theme of Journeys, led by visiting arts educators and staff.

Afternoon

Continue arts workshops.
Personal preparations for Shabbat.

Evening

Pre-Kabbalat Shabbat activity, followed by candle lighting and prayer or alternative options.
Shabbat dinner, oneg Shabbat, and optional Shabbat singing and story-telling.

Saturday, July 21: Taking Place — Shabbat in the Desert
Morning

Shabbat morning prayer, meditation, and reflection options. Kiddush and text study, followed by lunch.

Afternoon

Study and activity: “Taking the Desert into Eretz Israel”, led by Nesiya staff.

Evening

Havdalah and participant-led fun evening activity.

Jerusalem and Tel Aviv: Destruction and Renewal in Israel and Jewish Life

Sunday, July 22: To Conquer or Be Conquered
Morning

Visit to Ben Gurion’s grave: “To Conquer or Be Conquered?”
Concluding Negev activity: “Contrasting Responses to the Desert: Judaism and Zionism.”

Afternoon

Drive to Jerusalem.
Visit Haas Promenade overlooking the Old City.
Settle in at Youth Hostel in Jerusalem.

Evening

Visits with friends and family.

Monday, July 23: In Search of the Holy Place
Morning & Afternoon

Visit the old city and the Kotel: workshop and guided tour on “the Holy Place.” What is “holy?” How is this place holy to all religions? What makes it holy?

Evening

Dinner/pre-fast meal.
Erev Tisha B'Av — reading of Eicha and discussion of responses to destruction throughout Jewish history.

Tuesday, July 24: Loss, Memory, and Commemoration in Contemporary Israel
Morning

Visit to Yad Vashem.
Optional picnic lunch in the Jerusalem Forest.

Afternoon

Visit to Har Herzl, Israel's national cemetery, including visit to Rabin's grave.

Evening

Evening out on Emek Refaim.

Wednesday, July 25: Mapping Out the Arab-Israeli Conflict
Morning & Afternoon

Full-day seminar exploring the historical and current conflict between Arabs and Jews in the land of Israel.
Overview of the “political map” of Israel, and historical introduction to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Talk and debate with activists and politicians from across the political spectrum, and visits to relevant sites in the Jerusalem area.

Evening

Concluding session discussing responses to political speakers.

Thursday, July 26: Tel Aviv: Center for Modern Israeli Culture
Morning

A tour of old Tel Aviv, including a walking tour of Neve Tzedek, the first Hebrew neighborhood in Israel.

Afternoon

Shopping time and lunch (participants will buy their own) on Shenkin Street.
Visits to Independence Hall and Rabin Square; student-led activity on Rabin.

Evening

Meet Israeli Diller peers.
Each group, together with their Israeli peers, will do separate mifgash activities, led by American and Israeli Diller staff.

Friday, July 27: Mifgash
Morning

Continue mifgash activities for each group.

Afternoon

Drive to Jerusalem.
Shabbat committees and prepare for Shabbat.

Evening

Pre-Kabbalat Shabbat activity, followed by candle lighting. Tefilla and alternative options, including Conservative, Reform, Orthodox, Carlebach, Braslav and Reconstructionist synagogue options.
Shabbat dinner and optional singing and story-telling.

Saturday, July 28: Conflicting Visions
Morning

Shabbat morning prayer and activity options. Kiddush and lunch.

Afternoon

Rest time.
Creative study and discussion exploring different and conflicting visions of the land, people, state, religion, and culture of Israel.

Evening

Havdalah and disco party.

Joint Project with Israeli Teens: Creating Giving Communities in Jewish Life

Sunday, July 29 – Saturday, August 4

Diller Fellows will spend Sunday through Saturday hosted by their Israeli peers in their partner region in Israel. The program will include a hike, a three-day community service project, visits to different contemporary communities in the area, and Shabbat together in home hospitality.
