Review your past giving.
- Attribute percentages of giving to identifiable areas:
these represent your past priorities.
- Decide if these percentages
correspond to your current giving priorities.
Choose simple mission statements to clarify your own thinking
and engender family discussion and consensus. In doing so, you
may want to consider the following areas:
- Subject or program
area
- Geography (which could limit either organization or program
types)
- Grant type (program/project, operating support, capital,
or capacity building)
- Duration of funding (setting a standard
for longevity of support)
- Levels of funding (setting a minimum
amount)
Make procedural decisions.
- Determine the amount you intend
to give in the coming fiscal year.
- Allot percentages of your remaining
funds to your priorities.
- Set aside whatever dedicated funds are
non-negotiable, yearly allocations.
- Determine who has voting authority
and over which issues.
- Determine how authority will be divided
(i.e. all members vote on everything, each member has primary
responsibility over a certain area of giving, children are designated
a certain amount of funds to grant individually, etc.).
- Arrange
for (at minimum) an annual meeting.
- Decide whether grants will
be made on a rolling basis or at defined times during the year.
