Application Guidelines

Guidelines for Grant Proposals

The formal proposal should address all of the following areas in a maximum of three to five pages.

Please note: The Sarlo Foundation is not considering unsolicited proposals at this time.

The Unmet Need Being Addressed

  • Cite the objective data that exists regarding this need and indicate how it came to your organization's attention.
  • Describe the priority of this need and its importance within the Jewish and/or general community.
  • Why is your organization addressing this need now?

Scope of Project and Project Goals

  • Briefly describe the project being proposed and its goals.
  • Is this a time-limited, new, or ongoing project of your organization ?
  • How does the proposed program relate to the ongoing activities and expertise of the sponsoring agency and the experience of personnel staffing the project?
  • Rank the priority of this project within the scope of the agency's activities.
  • What geographic area will be affected?
  • What are the demographics of the population to be served?

Project Objectives

  • List the specific concrete, measurable objectives which will be achieved in the course of this project.
  • How many people will be served?
  • How will the project impact the people served?
  • What is the cost per participant?

Project Methods and Resources

  • How does the applicant propose to accomplish the above mentioned project objectives?
  • Have these methods been tried before? If so, indicate where and the results.
  • Will new staff be hired for the project or existing staff used?
  • How will your organization evaluate whether the objectives of the program have been met?
  • What internal fiscal resources does the applicant intend to invest in the project?
  • List the source, amount and status of other requests for funds for this proposal, including denials.

The Project's Future

  • If you receive partial funding for this grant, how will you proceed with the project?
  • How does the applicant intend to continue support for the project after the grant period?
  • What other organizations or individuals would be interested in or affected by the success or failure of this project? Are they involved now and how will they be involved in the future?

Additional Information Requested
Please append the following information to the proposal:

  • Grant summary sheet (click to download)
  • Current Board of Directors
  • Detailed project budget, including projected expenses for the entire project/program and all sources of revenue
  • Listing of other funding received and grant requests pending for the proposed project
  • Organization's financial data including budget vs. actuals for the past fiscal year, current operating budget, and audited financial statements
  • Amount of capital, endowment, or other funding sources available to requesting agency
  • A cover letter signed by the board president and the chief executive officer of the organization
  • Proof of tax-exempt status (first time applicants)
