This year marked the 13th Annual Jewish Community Endowment Fund’s Tax and Estate Planning Seminar, held at the Four Seasons Hotel, San Francisco. A record number of guests attended a dynamic presentation from Daniel H. Markstein, III. More than 160 professional advisors participated in the morning session, and enjoyed the presentation and the lively question and answer session that followed.
During the Endowment Community Luncheon, Roselyne “Cissie” Chroman Swig was recognized for her long-standing leadership and commitment to the Jewish community with a presentation of the published oral history of her JCF presidency. Mrs. Swig’s acceptance speech energized those in attendance and received a standing ovation.
Over 230 community members heard Dr. Susan Desmond-Hellmann give a thought-provoking and timely talk on healthcare innovation and reform. More than 130 philanthropists and advisors also took the opportunity to learn from a well-respected expert panel on current estate and charitable planning issues.

Advanced Estate Planning Strategies in a Changing Environment: Latest and Greatest Business Succession, Wealth Transfer and Charitable Planning Techniques
As a resident in the Birmingham office of Maynard, Cooper & Gale P.C., Mr. Markstein has concentrated his practice in the representation of closely-held business enterprises, conceiving and implementing business, succession, and tax plans, and the representation of various enterprises including publicly-held corporations in state and federal tax controversies. Mr. Markstein is a regent, member of the executive committee and past president of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, a Trustee of the American Institute on Federal Taxation, and a member of various committees of the American Bar Association Sections of Taxation and Real Property, Probate and Trust Law. He has authored articles for multiple publications on tax law, business succession, and estate and charitable planning techniques. Mr. Markstein also lectures frequently at legal education seminars throughout the nation, including the American Bar Association-American Law Institute estate planning programs, University of Miami Heckerling Estate Planning Institute, and Southern Federal Tax Institute.

Clinical Innovation in an Era of Health Care Reform
Dr. Desmond-Hellmann is the new Chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco. Board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology, she holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Desmond-Hellman previously served as president of product development at Genentech where she was responsible for research and development of therapeutic drugs targeting cancer and other diseases, as well as for business development. Prior to joining Genentech, she worked in clinical cancer research at Bristol-Meyers Squibb, a private medical practice, and co-led AIDS and cancer research projects in Uganda. Named to the Biotech Hall of Fame in 2007, Dr. Desmond-Hellman is currently a member of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco’s Economic Advisory Council.

Mrs. Swig, former Jewish Community Federation President, will be recognized for her long-standing leadership and commitment to the Jewish community with the presentation of her published oral history prepared by UC Berkeley’s Regional Oral History Office. She also serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Contemporary Jewish Museum, national vice president for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, member of the American Joint Jewish Distribution committee, and member of the Board of Trustees for San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Berkeley Art Museum and Mills College lifetime trustee. Mrs. Swig continues to serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the Swig Company. As a champion of the arts and intercultural exchange, she has received the JCF Judith Chapman Memorial Women’s Leadership Award and the National Foundation for Jewish Culture Patron of the Arts Award in 2003. |
